Padam Shri Baldev Raj, an Indian scientist and director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) in Kalpakkam.

Baldev Raj completed his BE from Govt. Engineering College Raipur (now NIT Raipur) in 1969/Metallurgical Engineering and the Post-graduate training at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai in 1970. He obtained his PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1989 and the DSc from Sathyabama University, Chennai in 2006. 

Academic and Research Achievements: Dr Raj's specializations include materials characterization linked to performance, quality management, testing and evaluation using non-destructive evaluation methodologies, materials development and performance assessment and technology management and human resources development. He has steered and participated in several national programmes of significance such as the intelligent processing of materials, characterization of cultural heritage, ageing management, and in a career of over 35 years, he of experience led to many first of its kind observations and discoveries in the field of materials characterization and applications. 

Other Contributions: Baldev Raj has been responsible for overseeing vibrant and synergistic research groups working on science, engineering and technological areas of indigenous fast reactors development at IGCAR, Kalpakkam. He has mentored over a thousand undergraduate, post-graduate and research scholars in various educational institutes and Training Schools of Department of Atomic Energy at Mumbai and Kalpakkam, at the PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, Greatlakes Institute of Management, Chennai and Tel Aviv University, Israel. 

Awards and Honours: Baldev Raj, Padma Shri, received the the Life Time Achievement Award of Indian Society for Nondestructive Testing in 2004, the Indian Nuclear Society Award in 2005, and the National Metallurgist Award from the Ministry of Steel & Indian Institute of Metals in 2007, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from International Institute of Welding in 2008. He is a Member of the German National Academy of Sciences, a Fellow of the Academy of Science for the Developing World, Indian National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences (India), Allahabad and the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore.
